Politics in Bangladesh is now at an important crossroads. Ahead of the Thirteenth Parliament elections, various political parties have become active in consolidating their positions. The ruling Awami League is busy demonstrating its strength, while the opposition BNP and other like-minded parties continue to agitate for an interim government and neutral polls. At the same time, BNP is planning to form a new alliance ahead of the elections, where the strategy of vacating the seats of the partners has been adopted. On the other hand, Jamaat-e-Islami and other Islamist parties have also taken steps to consolidate their power.
Recently, the situation has heated up due to the government's strict stance against the agitators. Apart from Dhaka, there were protests in other cities as well. There are fears that clashes will increase, particularly in student movements and anti-discrimination protests. The main demand of the agitators is the resignation of the current government and the holding of elections under a neutral government.
Moreover, political unrest is increasing as the Election Commission is yet to announce the roadmap. Experts believe that this situation will create a big challenge in organizing fair elections.
This situation is forcing the political parties to come to a compromise or to face a conflict. More important changes may occur in the political arena in the coming days.
